DNS Explained — What Happens Between the Domain and the Server
Understand how DNS works — A records, CNAME records, propagation, and what happens when someone types your domain into a browser.
When you type myawesomeapp.com into your browser, something remarkable happens in the background — in about 50 milliseconds. Your browser needs to figure out which computer on the internet has your app. That process is called DNS resolution, and it's one of the fundamental systems that makes the internet work.
You don't need to become a DNS expert, but understanding the basics will save you hours of confusion when things don't work and help you make better decisions about your infrastructure.
The Phone Book Analogy
DNS (Domain Name System) is often called "the phone book of the internet." Here's why.
In the old days, if you wanted to call Sarah, you'd look up "Sarah Johnson" in the phone book to find her phone number. You knew the name but not the number.
DNS works the same way.
